The Best Time to Book International Flights, Explained

Why the '3-week rule' is mostly myth, and what actually drives international fare timing.

Domestic fare advice doesn't transfer well to international routes. Long-haul premium inventory is typically released in blocks, and airlines adjust pricing based on how quickly each block sells rather than a fixed calendar window. In practice, six to twelve weeks out is the sweet spot for most transatlantic and transpacific business class fares, with a second smaller window opening two to three weeks before departure as airlines release unsold inventory. Route-specific demand — a route with only one or two daily flights behaves very differently from a hub-to-hub route with a dozen options — matters more than any universal rule of thumb.
